Following an attempt by the villagers of Bethel to oppose a drinking license for the old home of St. Teilo in the early eighties, 'Y Bedol' ('The Horseshoe') was opened in ----------- following its erection on the land between the garage and the school. But this was not the first pub in the village! As the story goes, a license to open a pub was granted to Marged, wife of Ffowc Williams, in 1832. The pub was opened in her cottage, Blaen-rhos, where Marged brewed and looked after the beer, without drinking a drop, whilst 'Wil Ffowc', a butcher by trade, treated the meat in the barn. When Marged was asked why she had opened the pub coming from a faithful family of chapelgoers, her reply was "in order to earn a living". Following a fight late one night between her sons and some local drunken youths who wanted more to drink, Marged decided to relinquish her license to keep a public house forever in 1837. The Reverend David Griffiths offered these comments from the pulpit - "he hoped he would never see another pub opening in the area". He had his wish for over a century and a half! The three brothers grew to be pillars of the local chapel and well respected members of the community. The cottage still stands today as a private dwelling.
