The most popular work in our region is agricultural, stock rearing, sheep and cattle. In Maerdy there is a Fish Farm in an old mill on the bank of the Ceirw river where they milk the salmon to get the eggs and hatch them. They sell the small fish to stock the rivers and lakes. In Bryn Glas the famous 'Maedy Empress' was reared by the vet Esmor Evans, brother of our head-teacher Mrs Edwards. On the Penyfed farm lives Aled Owen (the ex sheepdog captain for Wales) famous for rearing, training and selling sheepdogs. On the Brechdwr farm pheasants are reared which are sold to forestry owners. In Pentre Llawen the Celfi Derw company produce furniture in the patterns of old Welsh furniture. In Ty'n Rhos J. O. Jones his father keeps bees and produces honey to sell. There is a number of residents in this region that work for the Ifor Wiliams trailer company in Cynwyd. There are two garages not very far from the school.
