Aim: 
  • Discuss content and style of "The Hayes, Cardiff".
  • Revise terms of literacy appreciation e.g. similes, metaphors.

Activities:

 

Whole Class:
  • Review the previous three lessons - the traditional, straightforward picture of Christmas in 'Bore Nadolig' and the more complex view of Christmas in 'Diffodd y Golau'.
  • Revise the terms of poetic appreciation - rhyme, alliteration, use of questions, personification, metaphor, lists, internal rhyme.
  • Introduce the poem 'The Hayes, Cardiff'.
  • Explain simile/cymhariaeth - like....... as....as which link our 'pictures' in the mind.
  • Ask for examples.
  • Read the poem, 'The Hayes, Cardiff'?
Pair Work:
  • List examples of similes used and discuss how do they help us picture the characters and place.
  • Find examples of effective verbs and adjectives. What effects do they create? Work sheet

  • Write an appreciation of one of the poems in either Welsh or English.
