Why were there trenches on the Western Front?
|
| By
the middle of September it was clear that the Schlieffen Plan was not
going to work, but Germany had captured a lot of land in France and
Belgium. They wanted to hold onto it.
There was a stalemate. Neither side could go forward. So they tried to get round behind each other. As they went, they dug trenches. They did this until they got to the sea on one side and Switzerland on the other. |
