On Tuesday the 20th of April we visited Holyhead Library. It was a wet and windy day as we boarded the bus outside our school. We all felt quite excited not really knowing what to expect. We had met Tony Bradman the year before and had a great time on that occasion. At approximately 10 o'clock we arrived at the library and dashed through the rain into the main building. Once inside, we climbed the stairs to the lecture room. A very tall man greeted us and said, "Hello, I'm Frank Rodgers". We were all very surprised at how tall he was and sat down quietly to wait for Rhoscolyn school. Frank Rodgers told us that he came from Glasgow, where he had been an art teacher. He had two younger sisters and a dad who enjoyed mending clocks. When he was little, Frank Rodgers was afraid of the dark. One night, after going to bed, he thought he saw a monster in the corner of the room. When he investigated the monster, it turned out to be his jumper, which he had carelessly thrown, as he got dressed. The jumper had landed on the corner of the wardrobe. It looked very eerie as it moved gently in the breeze! (His bedroom window was open!) Mr Frank Rodgers read us a story which he had written and
illustrated himself. The book was called "Bumps in the Night". It was
about a family who moved into a haunted cafe. At night they heard strange sounds and
dad said it was just the water pipes. However, while investigating in the attic they
met a ghost! The ghost had lost his glasses and kept bumping into things.
That's why they kept hearing "Bump..Ooh!" all the time. The children
helped the ghost find his glasses, they were in a magpie's nest. From then on, the
strange sounds stopped. The next thing that Frank Rodgers did was to teach us how to draw faces. He told us that he used to look at his face in the mirror. He kept changing his expression and watched his features change shape. When drawing faces, the most important parts to change are the eyebrows, eyelids, mouth and hair. Mr Rodgers asked different children to come out and draw parts of a
face. We created four new characters. After we had finished Frank Rodgers drew
a picture of Mrs Grimbley Whyte, a character from his book, "The Bunk Bed Bus".
Finally we bought some of Mr Frank Rodgers' books which have been signed by him and put in our school library. When we got back to school, we all wrote letters to Mr Frank Rodgers to thank him for inviting us to the Holyhead Library. We were delighted to receive this reply.
